Crayfish belongs to the superfamilies of Astacoidea and Parastacoidea. It breathe with the aid of gills and live mostly in brooks and streams where there is fresh water running with shelter against predators. They feed on living and dead plants and animals. They are edible crustaceans and are used in preparing soups and dishes. They are not kosher due to the absence of fins and scales hence are not eaten by Jews.
